Join Nate Chappell and Ken Archer for a day long workshop at his favorite location for shooting shorebirds and divers on the Washington coast, the Tokeland Marina at the north end of Willapa Bay. Tokeland is a favorite roost area for Marbled Godwits, other species we have a good chance of photographing are migrating Whimbrel, Ruddy and Black Turnstones, Dowitchers, Willets, Western Sandpipers and other shorebirds. The Tokeland Marina is a good place to photograph divers such as Common Loons, Western and Horned Grebes, Red-breasted Merganser and others. If there are loons and/or grebes around they will often approach the dock quite closely if you are sitting down. There will be a maximum of 6 participants and a minimum of 2 with 2 instructors.
We will meet at the parking lot of the Shoalwater Bay Casino right on Highway 105 before driving down to the marina at 9:00 am. We will spend most of our day photographing right near the Tokeland Marina, photographing until about 7 or 8 in the evening when the light has begun to fade. If things are slow at the Marina (unlikely) I know several other places in the area to find more birds. I shoot the majority of my images handheld with a long lens, so I will go over handheld flight photography techniques and settings with the participants. I will also cover exposure and reading a histogram. We will also talk about the all important issue of how to get close enough to your subjects to obtain good images.
At lunch time I will give a presentation on photographing shorebirds featuring my images. For those of you coming from the Tacoma/Seattle area we can carpool if you are interested. Please bring snacks and water. We will have lunch at the fine restaurant of the Tokeland Hotel. I have a couple of cameras and 300-400mm lenses that I can lend to anyone who is starting out.
The cost of the workshop is $195 and includes all instruction and guiding. It does not include lunch. For more info or to get the sign up sheet, please email me at nchappell@trogontours.net
