On this workshop we will photograph dozens of Bald Eagles as they feed on stranded fish at low tide on Hood Canal, WA. This is the best spot I've been to for photographing eagles with a lot of interaction between the eagles and interaction between herons and eagles. We'll have access to both public and private tidelands for shooting. On this workshop we will also take one afternoon boat trip to see and photograph Orca Whales as well as spend some afternoons photographing Northwest songbirds, Wood Ducks and seabirds.

Itinerary: June 16, 2012 - Fly into the Seattle area during the day or the day before. At 3pm we will have a 2 hour presentation and photography discussion on photographing birds featuring Nate's images followed by a trip to a local park to photograph Wood Ducks. Some of the hens should have babies at this time. We will have dinner together and return to the hotel. Hotel: Best Western, Lakewood, WA
June 17, 2012 - Each morning we will drive out to Hood Canal to photograph the eagles. There will be about a 5 hour photo session with the eagles. This is the only place that I've seen regular confrontations between herons and eagles which make for great photo opportunities. For those interested in working on hand holding a long lens for flight shots it's an excellent location with plenty of subjects to practice on. In addition to the eagles there are lots of Great Blue Herons, Glaucous-winged Gulls and nesting Purple Martins in the area. The location is beautiful as well with opportunities for landscapes and birdscapes as well as the portraits. This afternoon we will drive across to the Olympic Penninsula to a location which has a breeding colony of Pigeon Guillimots. In addition to the guillimots, this is a good spot for Black Oystercatcher, Harlequin Duck, Heermann's Gull and other waterbirds. In the evening we will return to the hotel. Hotel: A nice hotel in Silverdale, WA.
June 18, 2012 - We will have a morning session photographing the Bald Eagles and Herons at Hood Canal. At about 12pm we will drive up to Port Townsend for our trip to see and photograph Orcas. We will be out on the boat from 2:30-6:30pm. This company guarantees that you will see Orcas or you get a voucher for another trip (which we would do the next day) but I can't guarantee how close they will be. After our afternoon boat ride we will photograph Rhinoceros Auklets off the pier and then return to our hotel. Hotel: Silverdale, WA
June 19, 2012 - First thing in the morning we will visit a local residence which has bird feeders and a nice setting which attract Northwest specialty species such as Steller's Jay, Spotted Towhee and Chestnut-backed Chickadee. After a couple of hours there we will head to the eagle location for a few hours of eagle and heron photography (likely with eagle-heron interaction). In the afternoon we will return to the hotel for some image critique and review. Hotel: Silverdale, WA
June 20, 2012 - We will have one more morning photographing the eagles and then we will give you a ride back to the Seattle-Tacoma airport for your return flight home. You will go home with a lot of great images and having learned a lot from 2 professional photographers.
If anyone comes out a day early or wants to stay an extra day you can arrange to have either Nate or Ken guide you for that extra day, just contact us.
If you would like to spend one of the eagle shoots photographing from a double guided kayak, you have the option to spend those hours shooting while Jason, a professional kayak guide manuevers the kayak. This is a great way to get different angles on the birds. There is an extra cost of $150 to do so.
Equipment: A minimum of a 300mm lens or a 200mm plus teleconverters and a digital slr. We have some lenses and bodies available to be lent out.
The Bald Eagles and other birds in the eagle gallery were all photographed in the areas we will be visiting To view the galleries please see Eagle Gallery
