ARIZONA WORKSHOPS MAY 2009
|
GREEN VALLEY AND MADERA CANYON, MAY 15-17,
2009
Maximum 3 participants
Southeast Arizona is a great region for bird photography and May is
one of the prime months as all the breeding birds have arrived and are
in their brightest plumages. We will be shooting from blinds at water
holes and water drips on 2 locations on private property. One is in the
desert and the other in an oak/pine woodland habitat. Dozens,
perhaps hundreds of Gambel's Quail are in the area, some with babies
at this time of year. Hooded and Bullock's Orioles, Broad-billed and
Black-chinned Hummingbirds (among others) and Arizona specialty
birds such as Pyrrholuxia and Phainopepla are some of the birds we
should get good images of. There should be migrating and breeding
warblers as well as many other species of bird. The property's owner
has a great variety of setup perches for us to use.
Fee: $895 includes workshop instruction, property use fees and local
transportation from Tucson, Arizona. It does not include lodging and
meals. I require a $300 nonrefundable deposit to reserve your spot.
Workshop: I will give instruction on all aspects of songbird
photography. Emphasis will be put on setting up perches in
conjunction with the background and lighting to help you obtain the
most beautiful images possible. Exposure, depth of field, fill flash and
other subjects will be covered. During midday we will spend some
time critiquing the photographs that we have taken and I will give you
some photoshop instruction.
Equipment needed: Although you will be quite close to many of your
subjects in the blind, it is best to bring the largest lens that you have
to help get frame filling images. I think that the minimum size that you
would want to bring would be a 300mm lens. If you would like to
borrow a Canon camera body and 300mm lens, we have both available
to lend to you. A smaller lens will allow you to do some landscape
photography, although this won't be covered in depth in the workshop.
Logistics: Fly in to Tucson, Arizona. I can pick you up at the airport, if
you like, and drop you off at your hotel on the night of the 14th or
morning of the 15th. The hotel that I would like the participants to stay
at is the Holiday Inn Express at 19200 S. I-19 Frontage Road, Green
Valley, AZ, telephone: 1-800-HOLIDAY. If you rent a car, then you can
stay where you like and meet us at the shooting sites. For those
carpooling with me I will pick you up each morning at the hotel and
after a full day of shooting drop you off there in the evening.

CAVE CREEK, AZ MAY 21-24, 2009
Maximum 4 participants
The Cave Creek and Portal, Arizona area is my favorite place in bird
rich Arizona. We will be staying and doing much of our shooting at the
excellent Cave Creek Ranch. The ranch's feeders and environs attract
many great birds including Blue-throated and Magnificent
Hummingbirds, Arizona and Acorn Woodpeckers, Scott's and Bullock's
Orioles and the last time I was there, one very tame Roadrunner.
Breeding and migrating warblers including Painted Redstart will have
arrived in the area by late May. Several species of owl nest in the
area. In addition, many mammals including Bobcat, Javelina,
White-tailed Deer and Coatimundi live on the ranch property. The
lodge has many bird feeders and a few water holes that are magnets
for bird and mammal activity.
Fee: $995 includes workshop, lodging (double occupancy) and
transportation from/to Tucson, Arizona. The workshop does not
include meals. I require a $300 nonrefundable to deposit to reserve
your spot. A non photographer spouse/companion can come on the
tour for no additional cost.
Workshop: I will give instruction on all aspects of songbird
photography. In addition, I will give instruction on mammal
photography. Setting up perches, exposure, depth of field, fill flash,
night time flash and other subjects will be covered. During midday we
will spend some time critiquing the photographs that we have taken
and I will give you some photoshop instruction.
Equipment needed: Although you will be quite close to many of your
subjects at the feeders and water holes, it is best to bring the largest
lens that you have to maximize your opportunities. I think that the
minimum size that you would want to bring would be a 300mm lens. If
you would like to borrow a Canon camera body and 300mm lens, we
have both available to lend to you.
Logistics: I will pick you up in Tuscon, Arizona the morning of the 21st
and drive us to Cave Creek Ranch. It's about a 4 hour drive. We will
spend the next 3 days shooting at the ranch. We will return to Tucson
on the afternoon of the 24th, so you can book an evening flight out it
you would like. If you are a single participant, I can pair you up with
another single for accommodation purposes. The rooms are fairly
large, generally with a bed in each of 2 rooms within each lodging. If
you would prefer to have your own accommodation, there is a $200
single supplement.
